We know how challenging it can be to get kids to cooperate, especially when going to the doctors office. That’s why we’ve made our office kid-friendly and provided a kids area with books, toys, and other activities to keep your children entertained.
For our young patients, Dr. Megan and the eye care professionals at The Eye Gallery go the extra distance to make eye exams as fun and non-invasive as possible.

Imagine trying to learn when your vision is blurry. For nearly a quarter of kids, visual impairment is a significant roadblock. Nearly 80% of material in school is presented visually, showcasing the importance of great vision!
The eye exam is broken down into two parts: pre-testing, which is completed by an optometric assistant, and doctor evaluation, which is completed by Dr. Baldwin.
The pre-testing involves several non-invasive diagnostic tests, including:
Dr. Baldwin will then perform a few additional examinations, including:
Dr. Baldwin may perform additional tests as needed.
Eye exams serve two functions: they determine how well the child can see (and whether or not they require glasses); they look for signs of developing diseases and other conditions that may influence vision.
In younger children (under age 6), eye alignment, teaming, and motor skills are assessed in order to determine proper alignment and function. Eye alignment is important for both eye development, focusing ability, and aesthetics; eye teaming is important for hand/eye coordination and overall focusing.
The American Optometric Association recommends that school-age children have annual eye exams. This is because the eyes change rapidly as a child grows, and new eye conditions and refractive errors can start to develop without the child noticing.
A particularly important part of a child’s eye examination is assessing the eye alignment, teaming and motor skills required for proper alignment and function. Occasionally eyes do not focus in the same spot, and this causes double vision and impedes a child’s ability to learn. It’s hard for kids to describe what is happening (or to even realize it’s not normal) because it’s a problem that may increase or decrease with the child’s fatigue level.
While rates of eye diseases in youth are quite low, conditions like glaucoma can still occur. An eye exam screens for these types of eye diseases (as well as other less-serious conditions).
Visual acuity is tested and the eyes are screened for refractive errors (nearsightedness, farsightedness, astigmatism). If your child requires corrective lenses, Dr. Baldwin will determine their corrective prescription. If they already have a prescription, it will be checked/updated.
The most common refractive error in kids is myopia (also called “nearsightedness”), which is exacerbated with liberal use of digital displays (laptops, smartphone screens, etc.).
Be assured that our eye exams are non-invasive and pain-free, and every step is made to ensure the comfort of the child throughout the exam. If your child requires glasses, we have a great selection of trendy and stylish frames that are designed to keep up with your kids.
Dr. Baldwin has been wonderful to us. Her knowledge and thoroughness is very high and her staff are friendly, courteous and knowledgeable. We have been very pleased with the care and consideration we have received from them all.
I've never had FUN selecting glasses before. The Eye Gallery team is fantastic--who knew that getting new glasses is better than shoe shopping?
Dr. Baldwin and her team are amazing. Megan is a top notch optometrist and her team is well-trained and professional. You won't find a better eye doctor in the Wichita area.
What an amazing experience. From the beautiful office, to the knowledgeable staff. The best part was how Dr. Baldwin actually listened to me and cared about the things that I cared about. I've had a lot of bad experiences with doctors in the past, but she dispelled them all in my first visit. I highly recommend to anyone.
I've been going to the The Eye Gallery for 2 years now and find Dr. Baldwin and her staff to be top notch. They are very easy to communicate with and offer excellent service.
