Eye care changes as we age. Age presents unique needs and challenges, like managing the effects of presbyopia, and screening for eye diseases that become more prevalent the older we get (such as cataracts and macular degeneration). Eye health should be top of mind for all senior citizens.
Working together, we can preserve your vision so you can enjoy a lifetime of great eyesight.
The American Optometric Association recommends that senior citizens have annual eye exams. Changes in vision happen more rapidly with age, and having your eyes assessed regularly will ensure that any eye diseases or conditions that may influence vision are caught and treated before they cause vision loss.
Schedule a fast, non-invasive eye exam at The Eye Gallery today. Book your appointment.
We are currently the only eye care practice in Wichita utilizing the iWellness to its maximum potential. This innovative, fast, and pain-free technology gives us unprecedented visibility into your eye health.
The eye exam is broken down into two parts: pre-testing, which is completed by an optometric assistant, and doctor evaluation, which is completed by Dr. Baldwin.
The pre-testing involves several non-invasive diagnostic tests, including:
Dr. Baldwin will then perform a few additional examinations, including:
Dr. Baldwin may perform additional tests as needed.
Our eye exams serve two functions: they determine how well you can see, and to look for signs of developing diseases and other conditions that may influence your vision.
During the exam we measure your corrective lens prescription and update it (as needed) to ensure that you are enjoying clear vision.
Senior citizens are more likely to develop a vision-impairing eye disease, and are more than twice as likely to develop cataracts and macular degeneration compared to someone in their teens, 20’s, 30’s, and 40’s. For this reason, our eye exams are comprehensive and go into the level of detail and depth required to sufficiently monitor eye health.
Presbyopia continues to develop as time progresses. It is the result of the eye’s lens hardening and losing its flexibility; as these properties change, the eye muscles can no longer focus the lens properly. This makes up-close tasks like reading difficult (this is why it’s common to see many seniors holding reading material at arm’s length).
Presbyopia can be managed successfully with corrective lenses. Some may also opt for laser eye surgery, though its effectiveness for presbyopia is inconsistent due to presbyopia’s continuous progression.
At The Eye Gallery, we will determine the level of vision correction needed and prescribe eyeglasses or contact lenses that properly correct presbyopia. Lenses with multiple focusing powers are available as both eyeglasses and contact lenses, allowing you to use the same lens for both close-up and distance vision.
Unfortunately, our eyes aren’t always the best at telling us when something is wrong. With many eye diseases being asymptomatic – meaning they don’t have obvious or painful symptoms – detecting them before they influence your vision is key.
Our practice uses some of the most advanced technology available in eye care today. Using it, we can detect even the most subtle of changes to your vision.
Working together, we can reduce the influence of eye diseases by as much as 95%.
Dr. Baldwin has been wonderful to us. Her knowledge and thoroughness is very high and her staff are friendly, courteous and knowledgeable. We have been very pleased with the care and consideration we have received from them all.
I've never had FUN selecting glasses before. The Eye Gallery team is fantastic--who knew that getting new glasses is better than shoe shopping?
Dr. Baldwin and her team are amazing. Megan is a top notch optometrist and her team is well-trained and professional. You won't find a better eye doctor in the Wichita area.
What an amazing experience. From the beautiful office, to the knowledgeable staff. The best part was how Dr. Baldwin actually listened to me and cared about the things that I cared about. I've had a lot of bad experiences with doctors in the past, but she dispelled them all in my first visit. I highly recommend to anyone.
I've been going to the The Eye Gallery for 2 years now and find Dr. Baldwin and her staff to be top notch. They are very easy to communicate with and offer excellent service.
